Bereton made his debut for Chile in the first game for his country at the ongoing Copa America tournament on Brazilian soil. He came on as a substitute in the final quarter of the game with Argentina which ended in a 1-1 draw in Group A. The Blackburn Rovers striker was then named in the starting XI for Chile in their second Group A encounter with the Bolivians and it didn’t take long for him to hit the back of the net.

Blackburn Rovers star Bereton justified his selection in the team after just ten minutes when he received a pass from Eduardo Vargas before unleashing the shot that found its way to the back of the net. He has been able to benefit from the absence of talismanic forward Alexis Sanchez who will miss the whole of Chile’s campaign in Group A as a result of injury.

Bereton played 84 minutes before he was replaced by Charles Aranguiz as Chile protected their lead till the end of the game to move alongside Argentina at the top of the standings in Group A. After the score draw between the two teams, Chile and Argentina won their second game by the same scoreline. For Argentina, Guido Rodriguez was the man who gave them the goal for a 1-0 win over Uruguay off the assist from star player Lionel Messi.

The goal from Bereton at the Copa America would have enhanced his reputation amongst the clubs in England.
